Celebrating 25 Years of Leisure Lounge!

During May 2017, Leisure Lounge threw a cocktail party to celebrate our 25th anniversary. It was an emotional gathering, with old friends and new coming together to toast the success of this custom furniture business. Here’s what Leisure Lounge’s Lynton Lloyd had to say on this auspicious occasion…

Time Flies When You’re Having Fun

“I really can’t believe that it’s been 25 years since I took my first tender steps up the stairs to the Leisure Lounge premises back in 1992! What a journey building this business has been – back then, I was a 24-year old kid, fresh-faced from varsity and doing my accounting articles (I hoped to become a CA). I wasn’t enjoying it, though, and was on the lookout for an opportunity to change career paths. Earning a mere R900 a month, with bond repayments of R600 on my bachelor flat, life was tough! On top of that, my rusty old Mazda got stolen and the Mynah bus become my daily transport to and from work, with a bicycle my weekend wheels.

At the time, Leisure Lounge was owned by a family friend. They were doing a bit of reupholstery, and I was helping with the books on a part-time basis. Out of the blue one Thursday, he phoned me to tell me he was closing the business and needed me to wind up the accounts. This was the gap I’d been looking for! I offered to take over the business – debt and all – with the proviso that I could get my hands on the business bakkie. He agreed, no money changed hands, and he gave me the keys to the bakkie and to Leisure Lounge! Much to my parents’ disgust, I immediately resigned from my job, and rode my bicycle to Leisure Lounge’s premises in Mayville the following Monday morning to begin my career in an upholstery business and, importantly, take possession of some wheels!

On that first morning, I met Leisure Lounge’s four remaining staff members – two of whom, Simon and Roy, are still working for us. Simon was a sweeper then – he is now a fantastic frame maker, and can manufacture any item from a photograph. Roy is a master upholsterer and takes on the upholstery work on new designs, as he gets the end result perfect time and time again.
It was Simon who suggested that we start manufacturing couches, not just re-covering them. And so, we started stripping couches and copying the fames – and from these humble beginnings we were slowly able to grow the business to where it is today. I still remind myself on a regular basis that our monthly turnover in our first year of business was a mere R11 000!

Cut Start-Ups Some Slack!

But business wasn’t always plain sailing – in fact, it wasn’t long after I took the business on that we started sinking. Friday afternoons were nightmarish – I can barely describe the agony of trying to scrape together wages or money to pay suppliers for the goods we needed to continue operating. I can clearly recall lying in bed at night in tears, not knowing where the next cent was coming from! At one stage, the company had eight judgements against it, and numerous summons arriving on my desk. It seemed insurmountable; enter two legends in the furniture industry without whom we wouldn’t have survived – Harvey from LR Foam and Farouk Danka of U&G Fabrics. Both of these gentlemen allowed me to continue purchasing product, despite the debts outstanding – the kindness extended to me by them helped us get to where we are today. In time, we paid off all our outstanding debts, and today these two companies are our biggest suppliers. The take-away from this story, especially in these days of ‘pay in advance and cash on delivery’ – business is tough, and we do need to cut each other a bit of slack from time to time!

Work Hard and Deliver

I’m often asked what makes a business succeed and, although having good products is critical, the loyalty shown towards suppliers and customers alike is paramount.

Without customers, no business can keep its doors open – as a team, Leisure Lounge works incredibly hard to offer the highest quality products and the best service that we possibly can. This hard work has been rewarded with incredible loyalty and support from our customers, who see us as the go-to team when they’re in the market for new furniture.

If you want to build a successful business, loyalty is a two-way street – special mention needs to be made of our suppliers, many of whom have been providing us for many years with excellent product and service, and our own team, who always have the best interests of Leisure Lounge at heart, and have rewarded us with many years’ service and unwavering dedication – Janine Cox, 24 years; Carla Coetzee, 20 years; Candice Smith, 15 years and Michele Canal, 10 years…the list goes on!

Last but by no means least, I need to acknowledge the role of my father, Pat Lloyd, in building Leisure Lounge. He joined me in the business a few years after I took things over, and played an instrumental part in growing Leisure Lounge from a simple reupholstery business to a leading manufacturer of fine furniture in South Africa.

Here’s to the first twenty-five years of Leisure Lounge, and to the next twenty-five years!”

– Lynton Lloyd, Managing Director, Leisure Lounge

Celebrating the Vintage Look in Your Home

Vintage style is timeless. That is a fact. Whether it be vintage fashion, cars or interior décor, you cannot go wrong with vintage. At Leisure Lounge, we believe that nothing gives a home a more elegant look than some careful crafter vintage pieces, which is why we have created a quick vintage furniture style guide to help you perfect your vintage-style interior.

Get the Perfect Vintage Interior with These Vintage Accents

With just a few focus pieces and strategically-chosen accessories, you can infuse your home with a vintage aesthetic. Keep reading the blog for an easy vintage interior guide to help you ensure that your home’s interior is timelessly appealing.

Vintage Trend #1. Brass Furniture

A Common, much-loved vintage furniture trend is furniture made with brass. This can be used for bed frames, chair or table legs to create a homely, industrial vibe from the past. Choose between a variety of colours, such as red, gold, brown, bronze and silver; you are bound to find a colour that is suited to your home. Besides furniture frames, brass can also be used on faucets and for door handles.

Vintage Trend #2. Vintage Trunks

If you are going for a vintage interior, then you are going to want vintage trunks; everywhere. These vintage trunks come in a variety of sizes and can be scattered around the home and they also have a variety of purposes. Place one at the foot of your bed to store linen, use one as a centre coffee table in the lounge or to store board games or placed in a hallway, simply for decoration.

Vintage Trend #3. Create a Conversation Pit

Nothing says ‘old-fashioned’ better than some good face-to-face social interaction. Give your house a vintage look by using a room, or section of a room, strictly for conversation. You can do this by arranging furniture to encourage conversation, without the influence of technology. Set up some couches around a coffee table and incorporate some vintage décor around it, such as old books on a shelf, the previously mentioned trunks or wooden display cabinets.

Chevron Trend: How to Use Chevron When Decorating

The chevron décor trend has exploded in the last few years, with chevron print making an appearance on walls, curtains, furniture and home accessories the world over. With bold colours in solid zig-zag patterns sharply contrasting against a white base colour, chevron is versatile enough to pass as vintage chic – and when used in conjunction with dark leathers, that out-of-Africa atmosphere can be achieved. So, are you ready to go chevron in your home? Here’s how…

Chevron Curtains

Chevron curtains are successfully pulled off in the bedroom, lounge and dining area – bringing texture and warmth to these living areas. Things to keep in mind when buying chevron curtains:

  • Light walls require dark chevron patterns for contrast
  • If you’re renovating, choose your chevron curtains before painting and match wall paint to chevron colour
  • Avoid over-frilly curtains if opting for chevron, as this will dilute the pattern effect.

Chevron Rugs

For ‘plain’ rooms with solid wall colours and little in the line of detailed surfaces, installing a chevron rug will break the monotony and create graphical interest underfoot. Ideas to compliment a chevron rug:

  • Chevron rugs pop against dark hard-wood flooring, no matter the pattern colour
  • Compliment your living area chevron rug with a dark leather couch for warmth.

Chevron Home Accessories

Add visual impact to any room with small accessories decorated with chevron zig-zags. Lamp shades, bowls and boxes laden with chevron print add visual contrast to any room. Some chevron home accessory options:

  • Place chevron bed cushions against white linen with a dark leather headboard
  • A large chevron fruit bowl on the kitchen counter or as a centre piece on your dining room table
  • A chevron-themed wall clock works well as a kitchen accessory.

Choosing the Best Furniture Fabric for Your Home

Your items of furniture are the core elements that create your home. They substantiate how it looks and feels to those who live there. After years of owning your favourite Leisure Lounge pieces, you may be in the mood to revive your furniture to bring new life to your living space. Or maybe you are in the market for a brand new furniture suite and are seeking beautifully-designed high -uality furniture fabrics. To help you, we have put together some tips for choosing the best furniture fabrics for your home. First, let’s look at what upholstery is.

What is Upholstery?

Upholstery refers to any fabrics, padding, webbing and springs used to create soft coverings for chairs, sofas and other furniture items. Starting in the Middle Ages, upholstery has consistently increased in popularity and then accessibility throughout the 17th to 19th centuries. Many kinds of textiles are used to upholster furniture, and in modern times, the selection of materials comes down to a few core consideration, which we will discuss below.

Step 1: Consider the Application

The first and foremost consideration is the application of the piece of furniture. Take a look at your living habits and how the furniture will be used: will the piece be in a high-traffic area, will it receive a lot of wear and tear, and who will be using it most?

High-traffic furniture such as in the living room needs to be upholstered with durable furniture fabric to ensure that it last for many years. Furniture that will likely see a lot of wear and tear may be better suited to hardier fabrics without any bare threads that can be snagged and pulled.

Do you have children? Or perhaps you have pets that are allowed up on the furniture? Not only do these factors guide your choice of furniture fabric, but they will influence your colour scheme as well. Darker colours will help to disguise dirty footprints and scuff marks.

Step 2: Think about Longevity

An often overlooked factor is how the upholstery will age over time. This is something a Leisure Lounge specialist can help you with. Most fabrics will require consistent cleaning and good maintenance to extend their lifespan and continue looking beautiful for several years. Some fabrics, such as leathers, require careful attention to maintain.

Factors such as regularity of cleaning, regularity of special coatings and treatments, sun exposure, and general maintenance all affect the longevity of your piece.

Take a look at our blog about leather cleaning and general upholstery cleaning for the best practices that will keep your pieces looking beautiful.

Step 3: Suss out the Shape

The shape of your furniture is a creative and abstract concept to keep in mind, so don’t hesitate to ask for advice. There are some best practices to consider when choosing the best furniture fabrics for your piece, in keeping with its shape. For example, if your furniture item is curvaceous and soft edged, it is recommended to stick to solid colours, as patterns may become disrupted during the upholstery process.

Larger furniture pieces benefit from rich solid colours as well, or neutral tones, as they are less likely to go in and out of ‘fashion’ over the years. Further, these pieces are ideal for accessorizing with bright and interesting scatter cushions.

Smaller pieces are more conducive with bolder shades and patterns, as they are unlikely to overwhelm your living space. Occasional chairs and ottomans are a fantastic way of introducing some spice into your space.

Pro Tip: Great Furniture Fabrics for Kids and Pets

Having a happy home full of children or animals, or both, is lovely, but dealing with the scuffs and stains that generally accompany them, is not. Some fabrics are more durable than others, and they can make wise choices for parents and pet owners. Faux suede furniture fabrics are easy to care for and clean, making them ideal for family homes. We also love slip cover couches, which can easily be stripped down and chucked in the washing machine – no mess, no fuss!

Cleaning

a) General – it is difficult to give precise instructions on doing this yourself since different fibres and fabric constructions require specialist techniques. We therefore recommend that you contact a professional upholstery cleaning company.

The effectiveness of the specialist cleaning will depend upon the degree of soiling. It is therefore advisable to have cleaning done before dirt and general soiling becomes too engrained. Under no circumstances attempt to wash the item or use the dry cleaning machine at your local supermarket. Having cushions cleaned separately can result in a slight mismatch of colours on the furniture. We recommend any cleaning be carried out on the whole piece to balance the effect.

b) Regular cleaning – dust and dirt can cause fabrics to wear and spoil colours. This can be avoided by careful brushing with a soft brush and vacuuming using the correct attachment – usually on a weekly basis.

c) Spots and spills – if accidents occur, always act quickly. Do not rub or soak the material or allow the stain to set in. Absorb the spillage using white kitchen roll or a white absorbant cloth. Where solids are concerned, scrape up with a blunt knife or spatula, being careful not to spread the stain. For wine, spirits or coffee, treat with distilled water only using soap or shampoo as a last resort.

Rather than wait until disaster strikes it may be prudent to consider purchasing some upholstery cleaning fluid now and keeping it safely stored for future use. Most stains respond better to removal attempts while they are still wet.

Before tackling the stain with any cleaning fluid, always do a test on an unexposed part of the sofa to ensure that no further damage is caused. Some cleaning fluids can affect the dye in certain fabrics causing ringing or smudging. If in doubt, do seek professional help.

Connected Couches: USB Couch Charger

We all know the struggle.

You’re sitting on the couch, half watching your nightly soaps while doing battle with a level on Candy Crush.

Your phone has been begging you to charge it, but the kitchen charging station is just too far away.

The battery should last until the end of the level, right?

Oh dear, the screen goes black and that’s the end of your Candy Crushing session…

Or is it?

Couch Connections

Leisure Lounge couches are meant to be sat on and enjoyed, and in the interest of keeping you on your couch – we’ve come up with something you’re going to love…

We’re calling them USB Couch Chargers.

So, either plug your two-prong phone charger into the socket, or use any USB cable you can find and plug it directly into the USB slot.

This negates the need for unsightly extension cables running through the living area.

Our new USB couch chargers come in black, silver or white and can be fitted to any new Leisure Lounge couch!

Couches: The Tanned Leather Trend

The noughties waved goodbye to the 90’s minimalism and said hello in a big way to opulent home décor. Think bold patterned feature walls, floral motifs and large vivid coloured couch suites. Not surprising if you consider that at the same time Paris Hilton was leading the Y2K youth on a rhinestone embellished, thong flaunting, Von-Dutch cap wearing fashion charge. But the millennium has rolled on – its time to put down the bedazzling gun and embrace clean lines and nature-inspired textiles like 2017’s tanned leather couch trend…

Why Choose Tanned Leather

Leather is one of the most durable and low-maintenance textile covers you can have for furnishings. A well-made leather suite will outlast you! The benefits of this are obvious – minimal wear and tear means less housework and repairs for you. Thanks to a variety of tanning processes (including chemical and vegetable tanning) you can get quality leather in any shade you want. However, apart from statement arm chairs in vivid colours, the trend is towards natural looking leather in polished brown hues. Don’t have a huge budget? You don’t have to purchase an entire suite brand new. The joy of leather is that it is a longstanding trend and you can source a smaller leather retro wing-backed armchair for a steal.

An Enduring Classic: The Tan Leather Couch

You can get a beautiful up-to-date look in your lounge by simply starting with neutral basics and building up from there. Think light walls in off-whites, wood tiles, concrete sprayed floors or monochrome carpets and, of course, tan leather couches. The great thing about having your core colours and furniture in subdued natural materials is that these won’t date. You can simply swap in affordable accessories depending on the season or trend, while more expensive core features like a tanned leather couch will remain relevant and tasteful.

Shopping for Your Tanned Leather Couch:

  • Versatile tanned leather couches come in many shapes and work well with any décor – a tan couch would look as at home in an earthy bohemian space, as it would in a hyper-modern minimalist New York apartment. The trick is picking a style and sourcing a couch that compliments that.
  • Make sure you buy a couch that is made of good quality leather and avoid cheap synthetic options, which have a reputation for breaking and wearing quickly.
  • If you’re going for sharp lines and minimalism let your couch reflect that with an upright square shape like this Contemporary chaise
  • For a more romantic and classic pick, buy a Victorian wingback or a plush couch with deep-button details.
  • Want a statement piece? Bring Africa into your home with zebra hair-on arm chair (certain parts of the couch will have the hairy patterned part of the hide remaining). This can be a funky addition to any lounge.
  • Use throws and cushions in warm colours and eye-catching patterns to create contrast against a neutral tan couch.
